Klassic Custom Decks • Oct 17, 2014
Since most wooden decks are made from treated woods, and the deck is exposed to the sun and rain; it must be looked after in order to ensure a long life span. Given here are some tips on how to remove and prevent mold and mildew from your wooden deck.

Pressure Washing

Pressure washing will easily power away all the mold spores along with any debris/dirt that hides on your deck. However, too much pressure may damage the surface, leaving it fuzzy. Just stick to the directions that come with the device and you'll soon find your deck cleaner than it's been in years.

Bleach

For removing mildew away from a wood deck, you cannot beat a combo of water and oxygen bleach. Oxygen bleach is a blend of hydrogen peroxide and soda-ash. It's one of the "greenest" products you can use to clean mold spores. Just mix up the magic formula as per the manufacturer’s directions and put it on the deck using a scrubbing brush. Finish up by rinsing your deck with a hose.

Sunlight

A good 'hot' day is the perfect time to clean your wooden deck. Letting it dry up in the hot sun is definitely an easy technique to kill mold and mildew. Dry wood is always unattractive to mold and the heat will get rid of those spores.

Tips for Mold and Mildew Prevention

The key element to preventing most mold and mildew is to control dampness. The most detrimental infestations often occur in moist crawl spaces, in attics,in wall-spaces where rain water has leaked in from the outside, and in basements with inadequate foundation drainage. Stopping water leaks, ensuring perfect air-flow in attics, maintaining crawlspaces, and drying/redirecting water away from your house foundation are the most effective defenses.

It's recommended that wooden decks be treated with a water-repellent preservative on a yearly basis or at a specified duration as per manufacturer instructions. Apply the water-repellent preservative a couple days after the deck has been wiped clean using a detergent/water solution. Do not mix ammonia or any kind of other detergent that contains ammonia with bleach. This combination produces a poisonous gas.

Finally, be sure to keep all deck cleaning solutions away from children.
