AN EXCELLENT MATCH
Creating an outdoor space that feels cohesive, elevated, yet still natural starts with wood. In order of preserving the natural look of the wood, we have a few pros and cons about some of the more popular types of finish.
DECK SEALER / CLEAR COAT
This is the minimalist approach, when you really believe in the beauty of natural wood. While preserving the tone, you can add a glossy or matte finish that enhances the functionality of your deck. This sealant is typically easy to apply and likely requires annual ap- plication. It helps to repel water and prevent warping and splitting.
TRANSPARENT STAIN / CLEAR FINISH
This is the minimalist approach, when you really believe in the beauty of natural wood. While preserving the tone, you can add a glossy or matte finish that enhances the functionality of your deck. This sealant is typically easy to apply and likely requires annual ap- plication. It helps to repel water and prevent warping and splitting.
SEMI-TRANSPARENT STAIN
By adding just a touch of color, this highlights the wood grain and natural texture. It takes a step toward better UV protection, hides discolorations and, unfortunately, needs to be reapplied every 2-3 years.
DECK SEALER / CLEAR COAT
If you want more of a raw, natural, unfinished look, this option can help. Once applied it looks like the color of wood but doesn’t do a great job of adding UV and moisture protection.
PAINT
For essentially a limitless palette of colors, paint is the way to go. Match your house, your pool, your patio—it’s all possible. It’s full coverage to hide imperfections and protect against UV rays. Major con for paint is the fact that, in outdoor environments, it can—and will—fade, peel and chip over time. Plus, it may need to be sanding before re-painting again. So, if you are after a certain, specific color—paint is the option for you.
HYBRID COATINGS
Thanks to chemists, there are some options that don’t necessarily
fit into one category. These blended take the qualities of old- school penetrating oils—and combine them with the advantages of newer water based or synthetic components. This creates a finish that performs better than a simple oil or water finish alone. These innovative products clean up with soap and water and have lower VOCs which make them easier to work with, especially if you are doing it yourself.
"There is just something special about working with wood. The look of the grain, the feel of it. It’s really versatile and easy to work with. I will always enjoy the simplicity of building a wood deck."
