Process of Installing Holiday Post Cap Lights
Klassic Custom Decks • Dec 26, 2014
Deck lighting provides an easy way of making your deck beautiful this holiday. The problem comes when mounting these holiday lights on a composite deck. Composite deck lighting is a home DIY project, which does not require you to hire an electrician. Installing these lights isn’t that hard as its installation resembles that of landscape lights. You can choose from a variety of rail lights, light posts and stair riser lights.

While some composite deck lights are powered by solar, most of them are powered by a 12-volt transformer. Check out the comprehensive guide below that will aid you in mounting the holiday lights on your deck. Here, the focus will be laid on post cap lighting.

Post Cap Lighting

  • Using a table saw, cut a 3/8 inch x 3/8 inch channel down through the center of the top surface of the top rail.
  • Move the fence near to the blade in order to remove the center material after making your two outside cuts for the channel. Then mark the center of the top surface of each 3x3-rail post.
  • Drill a 5-inch hole on the center of the rail post using a 1-inch diameter forstner bit. Placing the drill bit on the top rail channel, drill a 3/8 inch hole in the side of the 3x3 rail post towards the center hole.
  • Leave 6 inches of excess wire above the post after pulling down the low voltage wires via the center hole. Next, run the wire down the side of the end rail post. To get the low voltage wires into the transformer, drill a hole through the deck floor.
  • Using a wire stripper, strip the wire ends back by a few inches, and then align the wire polarity. The positive side is smooth black while the negative side is marked with white lettering.
  • Connect the low voltage wires to the correct polarity by using a weatherproof wire nut. With two screws, screw the post cap light to the side of the post. Then finally, connect the low voltage wire located at the end post to the transformer.
